Understanding Dyslexia

Every child learns in their own unique way. Dyslexia is one of the most recognised forms of neurodiversity, a natural difference in how the brain processes language and information. For some children and adults, this means learning to read, write, or spell can take more time and support.

Understanding what dyslexia is,  and what it isn’t, helps parents, carers, and teachers recognise the signs early and provide the right help. With understanding, encouragement, and practical strategies, children with dyslexia can grow in confidence and show the many strengths that come with a neurodiverse mind.

Now that we understand why dyslexia matters, let’s examine what it actually means and its impact on learning.

What is Dyslexia?

Definition and Overview

Dyslexia is a Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD) and part of neurodiversity. It affects how the brain processes written and spoken language, which can make learning to read, write, and spell more difficult. Dyslexia happens in people of all abilities and is not linked to intelligence or effort.

The word “dyslexia” was first used over 100 years ago by a German doctor, Rudolf Berlin, who described it as a “very great difficulty in interpreting written or printed symbols.” Today, we understand dyslexia as one of many ways a neurodiverse brain can learn and think differently.

A Modern Definition

Dyslexia is a neurodiverse learning difference that affects how the brain works with language. People with dyslexia may:

• Read slowly or find it hard to read fluently
• Have trouble spelling or remembering how words look
• Find writing and organising ideas more challenging

These differences can vary from person to person. Some may experience mild difficulties, while for others, it can be much more challenging. Dyslexia often runs in families and may appear alongside other learning differences such as ADHD, dyscalculia, or developmental coordination disorder (dyspraxia).

Although dyslexia can make literacy harder, it also brings unique strengths. Many people with dyslexia are creative thinkers, problem solvers, and effective communicators who have a unique perspective on the world.

Common Areas of Difficulty

Dyslexia and other Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLDs) affect around 10% of people. The signs can appear in areas such as:

• Reading, writing, and spelling
• Remembering information (short-term or working memory)
• Organisation and planning
• Time management
• Maths or sequencing
• Coordination and handwriting
• Sense of direction or spatial awareness

These challenges can be frustrating, especially in school. However, with understanding and the right support, children and adults with dyslexia can learn successfully and reach their full potential.

Understanding Dyslexia as Neurodiversity

For many years, people thought dyslexia affected more boys than girls. We now know that girls are often under-identified, as they may hide their difficulties or find clever ways to cope. Many children with dyslexia are bright, curious, and full of ideas, yet may struggle to show what they know in writing.

Seeing dyslexia as part of neurodiversity helps us move away from thinking of it as a “problem” and instead recognise it as a different way of learning, one that comes with valuable strengths.
